Nothing says the hipsters are here like the refurb of an old boozer but really, The Robin Crusoe at the bottom of Clissold Park has had the potential to pull the Stoke Newington yummy mummy crowd for years. If only the proprietors had given it a face lift and done something/anything with the car park!
We were approached to design and build the new area back in October, it was well before any contracts were signed or keys were exchanged but the proprietor was rightly excited. Declan Perkins is the face of the pub group who can boast of the Laureston in Victoria Park, The Regent and The Hanbury both in Islington and Lupolo in Leytonstone (also designed and built by us). There formulae is simple, classy venues, good service, excellent wines and beers and fantastic (no, really, I mean it) pizza and now, the Clissold Park Tavern offers all that and full sunshine until 8pm at night with loads and loads of seating.
Although we do get invited to garden parties, it is unusual that the Ground Level Workers get to enjoy our builds as much as we have this one, and while we have been out to munch pizza and sip the fine Lupolo craft beer, we have been ear wigging on what the patrons think of the makeover. Yesterday two girls at our booth cooed at how it reminded them of being on holiday 'it's got a real om shanti om vibe' said one, 'yeah it feels like festival, you could almost, almost, forget you weren't away' said the other. This was music to our ears, who doesn't want to escape the day to day when the sun comes out? Other comments over heard have included 'if it had a BBQ it would be everything!' - the good news is that we have installed moveable seating, planters and installed a large gate to accommodate food vendors so the place can take different types of parties or even a wedding! However, not everyone was happy about the space which is to be expected, we over heard one group of guys complaining that there are too many grasses so they can't make eyes with girls. I guess you can't please everybody and I'm willing to bet there were a group of girls out of ear shot, happy that the dudes that were staring at them at the bar are no longer in sight.
The full Ground Level Works included resurfacing the entire area, building shacks and benches, laying astro turf, constructing a pergola, installing and painting fence panels, installing gates and a totem pole, building sleeper bed planters, designing and planting a Mediterranean style garden complete with two beautiful majestic old olive trees and a privacy hedge. There are lots of smaller olive trees, soft grasses and agapanthus - chosen for the purple highlights and because they are all drought tolerant although the bar staff tell me they enjoy walking around with the hose at the end of a warm summers night and we are delighted that they decided to keep the green theme going in doors too! It really does have everything, deck chairs, fuse ball table and a screen outdoors for when the football is on and the sun is forecast. For anyone in N16 - it really is the bar of the summer if not every summer. Get down there.
